Peculiar curiosity on the history of anime and sci-fi

This is the first adaptation of Osamu Tezuka's now legendary "Mighty Atom" manga (a.k.a. "Astro Boy").

This live-action TV show predates the 1963 anime which is considered the birth of modern anime, the first Japanese animated TV show.

It only lasted one season for good reason: filmmaking technology could barely depict the original story on a real movie, let alone a low budget TV show in 1950s Japan. Dissatisfied with the results of this, Tezuka started researching a way to produce a new show that would be entirely animated, allowing his original vision to be translated to the TV screen.

During a trip to the USA, he saw some Hanna-Barbera cartoons on the hotel room TV set. They convinced him it would be possible to make a weekly animated TV show. After returning to Japan he secured financing and started training the artists at his Muji Productions studio to produce the animated TV show that would start a new era in Japanese animation and television.

Japanese cinema is celebrated for its refined minimalist dramas and avant-garde experimentation; it also introduced popular genres like jidaigeki (samurai epics), kaiju, and anime. Across both high art and mass entertainment, it often explores morality, impermanence, and the pressures of modern life.
