Caught Out There has two references to the movie Belly (1998): the shot of Malik and Heartly walking into Miss Niecey's place is an homage to the opening slow motion entry of DMX and Nas.
There are two deliberate misspellings in Caught Out There's in-film media. In the opening social media montage, the last post says "I hate it hear" but also "I can spell Notofearth." Later in the film, Sincere's book from Belly has the same title misspelling of Self Improvement as "Self Improvment."
Caught Out There has two references to the movie Belly (1998): viewers see a quick blink and you'll miss it shot of Heartly's coffee table and the "Self Improvment" book that Nas' character Sincere was reading.
When Heartly is on her date with the Notofearth, there's a reference to a quote from "The Color Purple": "I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don't notice it. People think pleasing God is all God cares about. But any fool living in the world can see it always trying to please us back."
