The story is set in Bologna, year 1589. Moresini, one of the best and most renowned doctors, is asked to perform a cosmetic surgery on the daughter of a very important magnate. Doctor seems to hesitate although he is intrigued by the surgical progress. The surgery is successful but something unexpected happens - he is now accused of being a heretic. He tries to defend himself but the enemy's resentment and personal grudge towards him is stronger.
