"Het Vonnis" (The Sentence) is a darkly absurd and thought-provoking film set in a near future where the death penalty has been reinstated through a public referendum. The twist: those who voted for it can be called upon to carry out an execution. In a small village, a mild-mannered dreamer (Jozef van den Berg) is unexpectedly chosen to fulfill this chilling civic duty. As he struggles with the moral and emotional weight of his task, two bureaucratic officials (Ralph Wingens and Herman Naber) embody the strange, bureaucratic forces behind the law. Based on an original story by acclaimed writer Toon Tellegen, this debut fiction film from Molenaar and Van Wijk delivers a chilling exploration of moral responsibility and societal extremes.
