Eleven-year-old Aki quietly boards a train alone, heading from Kitakyushu toward Hiroshima without informing his father. In his hands is a book about Sadako Sasaki-the girl who inspired the Children's Peace Monument. Aki's trip is neither an escape nor an act of rebellion; he simply wants to see where Sadako lived, walked, and felt, believing that understanding her world requires being there in person.

At the university where he works, Aki's father-a philosophy professor-is approached by a student seeking advice about quitting school. Their conversation drifts into themes of desire, suffering, and the endless cycle of human wishes. In the middle of the discussion, the father receives a call from Aki's school reporting his absence. Checking the GPS attached to Aki's house key, he realizes his son is already far from home. Concerned, he decides to follow the GPS toward Hiroshima.

Meanwhile on the train, Aki meets a young woman acting with an unusual mix of calmness and fragility. She asks whether he can "see" her, and gradually reveals that she recently attempted suicide in an accessible restroom but was interrupted by the appearance of a vivid blue frog. Her memory of the event is fragmented, and she boarded the train without a clear reason. Despite her instability, she stays close to Aki, asking questions and listening.

During a transfer at a small station, they wait together on a bench. The woman flips through Aki's book, asking about Sadako. Aki explains the story simply-how Sadako folded a thousand cranes, how she never once complained of pain, and how she continued folding until the day she died. The woman responds quietly, reflecting that Sadako must have wanted to live. Their brief companionship reveals a contrast: Aki speaks honestly about loving both his parents, while the woman admits she dislikes hers and feels disconnected from everyone.

As the father drives toward Hiroshima, he calls his ex-wife, but she offers little clarity about Aki's intentions. Wrestling with worry and irritation, he turns up the volume of the classical music playing in the car, trying to steady himself.

Aki and the woman board the final train together. She asks why he wants to visit Sadako, and Aki answers that he wants to know "what kind of place she lived in, and what she might have felt." The woman suggests that such a longing might be a kind of first love. At Hiroshima Station, she thanks Aki for the time they shared and the two part ways gently.

Aki walks alone through the unfamiliar city. His pace gradually quickens-driven by anticipation, curiosity, and something he cannot fully name. He finally arrives at the Children's Peace Monument, stepping around the structure to face it from the front. Standing beneath the statue, he looks up silently, absorbing the weight of the story he has carried with him.

As evening falls, Aki wanders near the river. The quiet wind, the distant sounds of birds, and the stillness of the surroundings contrast with the history the place holds. He pauses, without knowing exactly what he expected to find.

Later that night, his father finds him sitting alone on a bench. Overcome with fear and anger, the father scolds Aki harshly, demanding to know why he came all this way. Aki cannot answer and instead breaks into tears, clinging to his father. The father-caught between discipline, worry, and confusion-holds him tightly, unable to grasp the full reason for his son's actions.

On the drive home, Aki silently folds paper cranes in the passenger seat. He hands one to his father, who looks at it for a long moment before asking what Aki wished for while folding it. Aki finishes another crane and replies only, "It's a secret." The father drives on, uncertain of the meaning behind the gesture but sensing that something important has shifted within his son-something that words cannot easily reach.
