Matt and Meg have been together for years but six months earlier their relationship suffered a blow when Meg had an affair with Iain, a doctor at the surgery where she worked as a receptionist, causing her to leave. They are seeing relationship counsellor Paula, who frankly is not very good. Matt runs the Kendal tourist information centre with his friend Sam but money is tight and they are anxious to move from their rented house and purchase their own. When Meg's old job comes up again there is only one thing to do - go back to it.

The landlord has put the house up for sale but Matt and Meg are not ready to move out yet so Meg teams up with Matt's no-nonsense sister Gail, single parent driving instructor to give the impression that the house is haunted. Matt has troubles of his own when a gang of youngsters rob the tourist centre, making him feel cowardly, whilst at the surgery Meg and Iain are thrown together when they deal with a baby that has been abandoned.

For all Meg's efforts the house is sold and she and Matt move in with Gail and her children Millie and Danny, a less than desirable arrangement. On Paula's advice they decide to have a spa weekend but it does not go well due to the hotel's thin walls and a convention of loud businessmen. Back in Kendal a suitable house comes on the market and Gail and Sam view it on the couple's behalf, Sam using the opportunity to get closer to Gail.

Alerted by Gail Matt and Meg rush back to Kendal to view the house but they have to stop off at casualty where Matt ends up after a row about money. However, when it appears that the letting agent has given the house to another couple, Meg uses Matt's injury to their advantage and the house is theirs. They celebrate in the pub with Sam and Gail, observing Iain with his new, much younger girlfriend, a fact which causes Meg to admit to Gail, does make her jealous. Gail has her own problems when she has an accident teaching chubby teenager Ryan to drive, with talk of compensation.

Matt and Meg throw a house-warming party with Iain and his new girlfriend Kate as well as Sam and Gail, in case a plan of action is required. Matt prepares a Thai green curry but it is not going well and when Iain offers to help the careful decision to keep Kate in the dark about the affair with Meg goes out of the window as, with no food and a lot of drink, tempers get very frayed indeed.

With the air cleared things are going well for Meg and Matt and a little stranger could be on the way. Iain is proposing to Kate, much to Matt's relief though Meg still has some concerns that it might not be the right thing. Whilst Ryan takes his driving test for the fourth time Meg's less than discreet colleague Martin has a date with Paula, causing Meg to worry as to what revelations the couple may make about her. For Sam all is going well as he strikes a deal with Gary Deansfield, the local condiments king, to supply Deansfield chutney to the information centre, in exchange for a share of the profits of course.

Meg and Matt decide that they will decorate the spare room though they are unsure as to whether it should be done up in a style to welcome a new baby. Their lease is renewed but Matt still feels awkward because they only got the house when Meg claimed he was a wounded Afghanistan war hero and Andrew the lettings officer wants him to talk to his war video game chums. Everybody attends Iain's engagement party to Kate, which goes fairly smoothly despite Kate's unpleasant father, Meg being mistaken for Iain's fiancée and Matt having to talk himself out of a tight corner when a genuine soldier who fought in Afghanistan shows up. Then Iain hears some really bad news.

Andrew the letting agent offers to sell Matt and Meg the house at a knock-down price and Paula gives them the deposit from the compensation money for her car accident with Ryan. Matt goes to the bank but without Meg, who, seeing that Iain is in pieces, agrees to drive him to Edinburgh to view his dead mother. With area manager Chloe aware of Sam's little arrangement he persuades Matt to join him in the pub to flirt with her and soften her up. Mission is accomplished but when Kate turns up and convinces Matt that Iain and Meg are back together again he succumbs to temptation with her - only to be caught by Meg, who has resisted temptation with Iain. Sam meanwhile gets it together with Paula.
