Bob Monkhouse in Wipeout (1994)

Trivia

Episode #6.12

Wipeout

The grid subjects featured on this edition are:

Main Grids: Characters written out of soap operas; Japanese food and drink.

Auction Grids: Types of window; Parts of a suit of armour.

Final Grid: Films starring Peter Sellers.
A shockingly poor taste comment comes from Bob when contestant Debbie tells him her daughter is a singer and has special clothes made for her.

"I'd like to dress Natalie myself", responds Bob, primping his tie in a lascivious fashion. It seems Bob had forgotten that he'd just been told her daughter was only thirteen years old.

One possible explanation is that Bob had misheard Debbie's northern accent as saying "thirty", but this would reflect badly on how old he thought the contestant was to have a 30-year-old daughter; to say nothing of the canned laughter that greets his remark.
In moments that would be unlikely to be said in the modern age, one of Bob's semi-regular targets for jokes in his Wipeout episodes is Vanessa Feltz. The vast majority of his gags are digs about her weight, as here, where he describes her as the "Colossus of Rhodes".

He would repeat the "Colossus of Rhodes" gag in Episode #6.20 (1998), and make many other different remarks about her weight in other editions of the series.
The first main grid - characters written out of soap operas - had appeared in a similar form in Episode #1.7 (1994).

However, here the idea of the game is to match the soap opera character with their cause of death - in the earlier version, only 11 of the characters had died in the soap, the 5 who didn't being the Wipeouts.

While the grid from the Paul Daniels era had opted for an international feel, with American and Australian soaps included, the two grids still shared 7 possible answers: Valeria Barlow, Pete Beale, Archie Brooks, Miss Diane, Damon Grant, Eddie Royle (misspelt as Royal on the earlier edition) and Den Watts (listed as Dirty Den on the earlier grid).
The final grid on Peter Sellers movies contains the Wipeout answer of "The Sunshine Boys". As there is more than one movie with this title, and none are specified, this isn't included under Movie Connections.

The same grid also features Bob refer to The Pink Panther as a film series, thus including the sequels by association. However, as a sequel isn't specified, only the original movie is included in Movie Connections.
