The world is on the verge of nuclear war. The USSR receives a secret Pentagon plan, according to which it is planned to strike Soviet targets from German bases. The Politburo, headed by Mikhail Suslov, votes for a preemptive strike, but Secretary General Leonid Brezhnev wants to prevent a war that could lead to a global catastrophe.

Recruited by Brezhnev, Valeriy Pletnyov and Vyacheslav Vardanov travel to West Berlin on a secret mission to establish contact with German Chancellor Willy Brandt. To do this, they will have to bypass not only Soviet intelligence, but also Western intelligence, which by all means wants to accelerate the escalation of the conflict.

Secret negotiations between the USSR and West Germany are under threat due to political intrigues, espionage and power struggles. The meeting of Varadanov, Pletnyov and Bar risks being disrupted by KGB agent Petukhov. Brandt understands that he needs a powerful political achievement to strengthen his influence.

Vardanov and Pletnyov will have to hand over classified information to Brandt personally. This is the only way to prevent the deployment of American missiles in Germany. Meanwhile, a guest from the past appears in Vardanov's life, who offers him a choice: stay in the West or return to the USSR.
