His Name Was Hamlet (2025)

Plot

His Name Was Hamlet

Summaries

  • A well-known theatre director attempts to put on a new version of Hamlet. But his actor friends don't want to do Shakespeare because they don't understand him. The director feels that a new era is approaching; his inner world is in growing conflict with the external world around him, creating an entirely different reality. It is only when he grasps the true meaning of Shakespeare's tragedy that he is able to find a way out of the darkness.

Synopsis

  • People who work on stage and screen live in their own world. One where there are no real heroes and no real villains, a world devoid of real feelings and emotions. The only thing that is real to these people is death.

Dark days have come, "the time is out of joint", and the world of art is in turmoil. A once celebrated director is struggling to get people to watch his films and plays - they are too complex for the consciousness of modern movie- and theatergoers. He wants to stage a new version of Hamlet, but the actors in his troupe have no interest in doing it.

His long-time friend and producer wants to fire him so the theatre can put on entertainment shows instead of the classics.

The director dives into the darkest depths of his subconscious, where his imagination brings the characters of Shakespeare's tragedy to life. They appear before him as people close to him who have become his enemies. His assistant is Ophelia, his producer Horatio, the man who betrayed him.

The director is trapped, scared, hunted and alone - just like Hamlet. He recognizes that there is a conspiracy... but what he cannot grasp is that the conspiracy is not against him, it is against his culture, utterly superfluous in modern life.

He feels like his is in a circus ring: people are laughing all around, and he is being forced to do tricks by a trainer. The director's consciousness cannot cope with the rapid changes in the world around him.

One day, he returns home and finds himself in Elsinore. His mind plays one last game with him, a word game that changes his life.

The image of Hamlet begins to take hold of him not only mentally, but also physically, manifesting itself in a feeling of hatred towards everyone around him, a thirst for revenge, and real pain.

He wants to destroy his enemies to free himself. But this desire is food for his ghosts.
