Growing up in the 2010s, the era of YouTube "celebrities" was relatively new. Your parents probably did not know who Pewdiepie was, and the content creators online knew they were making content for the internet. To me, this balance was perfect. YouTube was it's own medium, the videos and the personalities were more varied and niche than anything you could see on TV, and that's what caused the rise of YouTube as a massive cultural phenonemon.

These days, the distinction between YouTuber and celebrity are long gone. Ryan's Toy Review broke free of that mold first--he was also the first to fail, but that was bound to happen. Now, Jake Paul, once fodder for memes about "It's Everyday Bro," is considered a world class boxer, his brother, who had numerous controversies is now a major WWE star. Mr. Beast is now a household name, one of America's biggest "philantrophists" (quotes very much intended," and a game show host with a personality of a wooden board but with the name recognition of Bob Barker in the latter half of the 19xx's. The distinction between YouTuber and celebrity is gone. And that is a shame, because now we''ve put these people on pedestals which they should have never been on. Mr Beast is a great example of a person who should have never been allowed to become as popular as he did. He exploits America's poor, a country in need of economic regulation and revolution, for likes and dollars on YouTube. Yes, buying surgeries for poor people might seem like a great gesture on paper, but it's not only a distraction from the larger issues with our economy, but it's also just making someone else richer. Pewdiepie did not exploit the poor in order to make his millions; why does Mr. Beast?

So where am I going with this? Topper Guild, on the surface, might just seem like the average "sloptuber." Another Mr. Beast like with his ridiculous challenges, uncanny photoshopped thumbnails, and bright colors. Underneath that, though, is something that is actually good. These videos are clearly scripted. Every person in them are actors. You can look them up here on IMDB and see that they are actors. Mike Ferguson, for example, plays a bounty hunter in like, A LOT of these videos. He's also in a bunch of other "sloptuber" videos, from Zhong and Brent Rivera.

So why is this better than Mr. Beast? Because: everytime Topper does a video, he is not only employing a camera crew, production staff and editors, but he is also employing actors. This doesn't make Topper a saint, or notable in anyway, but he's not exploiting the poor to make "slop," he's just making entertaining videos with actors, the way it used to be done. Topper's videos are a far cry away from how YouTube used to be, but let's be real. There is plenty of content on the website that embodies the feeling of old YouTube, and there is no stopping the gravy train that is mass produced, TV style content. At least Topper is doing the good deed of hiring people, which actually does more good than fake acts of kindness to make money.
