Thaddeus mentions being born in the Boneyard, which was a major location in Fallout (1997) and Fallout 2: A Post-Nuclear Role-Playing Game (1998). The Boneyard, also known as the Angel's Boneyard, was the name collectively given to the ruins of Los Angeles, California. Following the Great War, a number of settlements emerged in the Boneyard, with it eventually becoming part of the New California Republic as the State of Los Angeles. Prior to joining the NCR, the Boneyard was often a violent place due to gang wars between the Rippers and Blades, and in 2161 the southern area of the Boneyard was the location of the Cathedral, which was the base of operations for The Master and his Super Mutant army.
The bulletin board in Vault 32 has a notice that reads: "LOST! One copy of Dean's Electronics. If found, please return to Davey". Dean's Electronics is a skill book which permanently increases a player's Repair skill when read in Fallout (1997), Fallout 2: A Post-Nuclear Role-Playing Game (1998), Fallout Tactics (2001), Fallout 3 (2008), and Fallout: New Vegas (2010).
The novel Hank discusses with Lucy is "All Quiet on the Western Front", written in 1928 by German author and World War I veteran Erich Maria Remarque, and is considered by many to be the greatest war story of all time. Lucy says she found the story "very upsetting", as the story thoroughly details German soldiers' extreme physical and mental trauma during the war, and their difficulty returning to civilian life after the war. The story is primarily about a German youth who eagerly signs up to fight in the war due to his sense of patriotism, but soon becomes disillusioned when he witnesses the horrors of war. It's worth noting that World War I had horrors no soldier had ever experienced before, as this was one of the first wars where machine guns and tanks were widely used, the first conflict with aerial warfare, and was the first war where flamethrowers and chemical weapons (mustard gas) were used. The book has been adapted into several films including: All Quiet on the Western Front (1930), All Quiet on the Western Front (1979), and All Quiet on the Western Front (2022). The novel is also mentioned in Fallout (1997), in a random encounter after the Vault Dweller joins the Brotherhood of Steel as an Initiate, the player comes across a Brotherhood Paladin in the wasteland who asks them what they have to report, one of the responses the player can choose is "All is quiet on the western front".
(At 23:20) The song playing at the Inbreeding Support Group is "Uranium Fever", written and performed by Elton Britt in 1955. The song was broadcast on Diamond City Radio in Fallout 4 (2015), and the Uranium Fever public event added in Fallout 76: Mutation Invasion (2023) is named after the song.
(At 12:24) The instrumental music playing in the "simulation" room is "Song of India" by Tommy Dorsey and His Orchestra. Their 1944 cover of "Opus No. 1", written by Sy Oliver, was broadcast on Appalachia Radio in Fallout 76 (2018).
