The title Viva Verdi ("Long Live Verdi") echoes a political slogan that was frequently painted on walls by supporters of the Italian unification movement in the mid 19th century. While ostensibly proclaiming support for popular composer Giuseppe Verdi, the slogan actually used "Verdi" as an acronym for "Vittorio Emanuele Re D'Italia" (Victor Emanuel King of Italy), in reference to the then king of Sardinia and future king of Italy.
