The set design of the Breakwater Inn interior includes multiple intentional nods to the hotel from the film adaptation of The Shining (1980). Production designer Steve Arnold custom-designed the ghostly blue Victorian damask wallpaper inside the hotel to match the aesthetic of the classic horror film, and a scene where Tom Loftis hears a New Year's Eve countdown celebration through a bathroom wall grate directly mirrors a sequence from that production.

The narrative premise of the episode, wherein an aggressively skeptical protagonist accepts a dare to spend a single night inside a highly haunted hotel suite to debunk local legends, shares structural and thematic commonalities with Stephen King's 1999 short story 1408 and its subsequent 2007 film adaptation. While King wrote the literary source material for both properties, the specific visual motifs utilized during the lodging sequences draw primarily from Stanley Kubrick's cinematic interpretation of the former narrative.
