Access via the antique shop ... Exit to hell!

"Oddities" had its world premiere at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFFF), in the presence of honoree guest Adrienne Barbeau who was also knighted by the festival's board. Mrs. Barbeau deserves every applause and homage she receives, because she is a brilliant actress with a great repertoire. "Oddities" is not necessarily a highlight, but she remains the queen of classics such as "The Fog", "Escape from NY", and "Creepshow".

Now, don't get me wrong, "Oddities" is a well-made movie and offers exactly the type of entertainment you're looking for at a horror festival and/or during a movie night with friends. What you shouldn't be hoping for, however, is originality or a logical explanation for all the crazy things you witness.

Wild party girls McKenna and Rose get into trouble and must flee. You know what happens in horror movies with people running from their troubles, right? They end up in even bigger misery! The girls seek shelter in a remote antique shop, but the owner - Adrienne Barbeau - soon turns out to be much more dangerous than the junkies they are running from. It's not quite clear for what purpose Adrienne and her overweight grandson hold McKenna and Rose prisoner, but there's "something" in the barn, for sure!

Some exciting moments & suspense, a few grisly kills, and more than decent acting performances make "Oddities" an above-average and recommendable horror outing. Barbeau clearly carries the film, but young actresses Lilimar and Lovie Simone also deliver very good performances. As long as you don't ask yourself too many questions or crave explanations, you'll have fun.
