I am sitting around retired, and it was too cold to go outside. I figured I would find a quick "so bad it's good" dragon movie. This one caught my eye, it seemed quite ripe for that low-budget, in on the joke kind of film. Instead I got a film that was almost decent. I wonder if a little better writing, a little more money, a little more polished editing would have pushed it over into good. The actors aren't terrible. The Dad is sort of a Temu Brian Cox, the hunter is Temu Dave Bautista, the daughter has some promise, perhaps with more roles, better material she will break through. The story just doesn't pull you in and make you care. I don't want to spoil anything for someone who might really like this. As it is, for me it's just a lot of talking that doesn't really propel anything, there is the occasional CGI, budget versions, dragon. I wish all involved with this film luck on their career going forward, I hope they get better material and bigger budgets. I think it also suffers from the Writer/Director curse. It is totally disjointed and likely makes sense within one guys head, but I was left guessing about the point. That's okay if you are Peter Jackson, but it rarely works out for the best for others. The music is wonderful though. This movie had promise, perhaps someday a more skillful team with more money will take it on.
