TIFF '25: Fascinating and mystical, if not a bit meandering

I saw Wrong Husband at TIFF this year and was really impressed by how the film felt like it was ripped straight out of another time altogether.

This is a deeply immersive film that forgoes appealing to outsiders and instead is about as authentic as possible to the Inuit community. There are strengths and weaknesses associated with that approach; on one hand, Wrong Husband is deeply immersive and unique. This is not a world like our own; it's one with strict norms about gender, matrimony, and the division of labour. A world of magic and mysticism; a world of stunning vistas and geographic emptiness.

On the other, the film lacks the sort of structure and from time to time, found it hard to follow. There are several time jumps in the film that aren't properly explained and terms some of the characters use to refer to each other (i.e. Little and big sister) that made determining exactly who everyone was a bit confusing.

Yet, with grounded performances, lots of humour, an excellent musical score, and subject matter that I found personally quite fascinating, I'd recommend Wrong Husband to pretty much anyone. It's a very sweet and enjoyable love story more than anything else, and I hope more people get to experience it.

This is a movie with little to no narration.

The horror genre features stories that aim to elicit fear, suspense, and a sense of dread in its audience. Horror stories often explore themes related to the unknown, the supernatural, and the macabre, and they frequently evoke strong emotional reactions such as anxiety, terror, and unease.

The romance genre features the theme of romantic relationships and emotional connections between characters. These stories focus on the development of love, desire, and intimacy between protagonists, often exploring the challenges, conflicts, and triumphs that arise in their relationships.
