Dana Ivgy has been repeatedly cast as somebody glum, hurt, and confused, but this movie takes her all the way into psychosis. Sometimes she's lucid, sometimes she isn't, sometimes she's mysteriously perceptive, sometimes her speech accelerates to manic speed. The problem with movies that show disturbed people as unpredictable is that as the character's behavior skips about, it's always - too obviously - the particular kind of behavior that will help the plot along at the moment. Life Without Credit does suffer from that phenomenon in places, but the problem is less obvious than usual because there isn't a very intricate plot and because rather than playing out against an easily understood setting with everyday behavior from everyday people, the movie positions the protagonist, Levana by name, in a cityscape that we never quite get a fix on (as the camera continually chooses different angles) and the people whom Levana meets all appear to be outcasts like her. The movie not only adopts her point of view but goes it one better by becoming a little crazy now and then itself at the expense of its own consistency.

The movie shows us a world where people have given up on everyday gratification and are immune from everyday needs. When the end titles roll, we learn that one character, whose name wasn't revealed in the story, is called "Becket." It fits the movie's ambience (although there's a "t" missing.)
