Breaking up is never easy, especially when (young) kids are involved. I experienced 'a family' as an impressive emotional kaleidoscope. Intimate, heartfelt, human and beautifully shot and acted.

While the kids, Nina and Eli, struggle to remain loyal to both their parents, the parents have their own struggles. We witness the same month twice: once through the eyes of Nina, once through the eyes of Eli. No melodrama, no judgement. Yet what damage and pain and unfulfilled needs, despite the fact that life goes on with laughs and fun as well. And -no spoiler alert- : there is hope.

I had the pleasure of attending the premiere at the Berlinale. The audience seemed mesmerised. The international press was raving. The jury awarded 'a family' with a Special Mention prize.

To be fully seen, must be one of the most powerful forces in relationships. If only for that, this subtle gem deserves to be seen.
