News of the beast spreads, prompting a group of the older boys to set out in search of it. Growing tired of hesitation, Jack takes control of the mission, while Simon begins to find his voice.

I left this a couple of weeks to return with a fresh perspective, but some issues are impossible to ignore. The music remains horrendous - intrusive to the point of distraction - and the overly polished visuals continue to undermine the raw, desolate tone the story demands. The artificial colour palette gives it an almost art house quality, and the abundance of lingering, atmospheric shots makes the episode feel padded rather than purposeful.

It doesn't take long for Jack to assert himself, hardly a surprising development, though at least there are hints that he's more than just bluster. The long-awaited conflict between the boys finally arrives, but it's been such a slow build that it lacks the impact it should have. The descent into savagery still doesn't quite convince, never fully ringing true.

The performances are a mixed bag, though Lox Pratt once again stands out. Ultimately, it still feels like a missed opportunity. What should have been an iconic, unsettling drama instead comes across as overproduced and strangely hollow.
