One of the younger boys, the lad with the birthmark on his face, disappears, prompting Jack to finally take notice when another child insists that something dangerous emerged from the sea. Jack is determined to hunt down meat.

It's fair to say I wasn't exactly blown away by the debut episode, but this moves in a far more promising direction. At last there's atmosphere. The island feels colder, more menacing, and the threat - hinted at rather than fully revealed - gives the story some genuine bite. For the first time, it doesn't feel like a boy scouts jamboree.

The tension builds steadily, and the latter half of the episode delivers something much closer to the dread and violence that William Golding wrote so effectively. The early stages still suffer slightly from that curious lack of psychological fracture - the distress sometimes feels closer to mild inconvenience than trauma - but once the fear takes hold, the improvement is noticeable.

Jack's introduction remains questionable. Bright light, swelling choral tones - it borders on celestial. Rather than allowing his darker instincts to surface gradually, the series seems determined to underline his trajectory from the outset. Subtle it is not.

I still struggle with the score, which feels intrusive, and the overall glossiness of the visuals. At times it's as though they've decided to gild the lily, polishing what should feel raw and unsettling.

That said, the image of Jack drenched in blood is far more in keeping with the essence of Golding's savagery. The contrast between that and the earlier stylised presentation is striking.

It has improved, certainly, but there remains something slightly off in the execution.
