An intriguing and twisted movie starred by Eva and Fabián, two twin siblings about to turn eighteen. A tragic accident on the semi-deserted streets surrounding the rural villa of a wealthy family, on a hot summer night, involves twins Eva (Julia Martínez) and Fabián (Diego Garisa) and their friend (and Eva's almost-boyfriend) Javier (Itzan Escamilla) , with irreparable consequences for all, both physical and spiritual. The accident circumstances are both confusing and opaque; only the two siblings and their mother, Mabel (Sonia Almarcha) , seem to know them.

Following "La consagración de la primavera (The Rite of Spring)" filmmaker Fernando Franco directs this provocative, thought-provoking and psychological thriller, winner of the Best Screenplay award at the 2025 Seminci Film Festival, about the consequences of a terrible accident on a summer night.

Based on the novel of the same name by Marcelo Luján, this thriller, while intriguing, delves deeper into psychological drama with a profound character study. It features strong performances from a cast largely unknown to the general public, who deliver natural and perfectly suited performances for their roles. "Subsuelo" (literally "Underground," indicating the truth hidden beneath a layer of conventions and secrets) aims to be essentially a psychological thriller that doesn't quite reach the heights of suspense, light years away from the masterpieces of Alfred Hitchcock or Michael Haneke that inspired the director: it lacks the complex plot and extreme suspense of the former, and the studied and deliberate cruelty of the latter. The peculiar relationship between Eva (splendidly portrayed by Julia Martínez) and Fabián (well played by Diego Garisa) is the axis of a story that seeks to stir the conscience and deeply shock the viewer with certain scenes. And perhaps the most successful elements are the peculiar relationships between the protagonists, thanks above all to the two lead actors, which combine with the sense of mystery and tension they sometimes provide. However, for a seasoned and attentive observer, the young man's psychopathic, abusive, and sinister nature is evident from the first scene. The family relationships-between the children and their mother, Mabel, and with an almost absent father-but even more so the connection between Eva and Javier's brother, Ramón-played convincingly by Nacho Sánchez (who had already delivered a disturbing performance in Manticore)-are somewhat confusing. Special mention should also be made of the role given to the dog, Vega, who surprisingly becomes the film's dramatic star in the final act.

The feature film was directed reasonably well by Fernando Franco. However, it eventually becomes slow and tedious, slowly and with astonishing calmness describing the scant action and dwelling continually on the psychological aspects of the main characters, which leads to a certain boredom in the average viewer. Fernando Franco is a good filmmaker and a skilled craftsman of the medium. He is an expert film editor, having edited well-known films such as *One Year, One Night*, *Robot Dreams*, *Belmonte*, *Black Beach*, *May God Forgive Us*, *Little Loves*, and *Money*; he has also sometimes acted as a producer and, occasionally, as a director. He has directed several short films and some feature films, such as *To Die*, *Wounded*, *The Rite of Spring*, and *Subsoil*. Rating: 5.5/10. Acceptable and passable, but not notable.
