Mel Brooks had already planned a sequel many years before it went into production. He once said that he would never make a second Spaceballs (1987), but joked that he might consider making "Spaceballs 3: The Search for Spaceballs 2". In a 2004 interview, Brooks claimed that he was working on a script for a sequel, saying that he was even considering to release the film about the same time as Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005), saying "Best case scenario: A week before the new Star Wars opens. Worst case scenario: A year after the new Star Wars opens". However, the project never materialised, and the sequel wouldn't be officially announced until June 2025.
