Stronger aspects generally overcome a melodramatic core

A group of friends get together for one last time before most of them will head off to their various schools together and/or individually. The night is filled with all the fun and activity they will remember so fondly, but the edge on the night means much more than this comes out.

The first thing to say is that Set No Path is a really well made film. Visually it is impressive in its edit (split screen), its film (from old super8 to crisp modern images no matter the low lighting) and generally as an idea it is really good. The problem with it is that it starts out like some corny US teen advert and, although it gets better than this, it forever stays in teenage melodrama. To those in that stage of their lives then this will work better than those who are older and struggle to get beyond the self-importance of the characters. This aspect of it is a shame because there is a lot to enjoy and engage here and although aspects of ti really grated on me, generally I felt there was enough good to rise above the weaker melodramatic aspects.

The technical aspect helps a lot but so does the fact that it has a satisfying bleak ending in many different ways; the most obvious one feeds into the melodrama but the rest is really quite brave considering the tone of the film up till that point. The performances are spirited but they are part of the melodrama; that said, generally they have a natural feel when it counts and this buys them points to get over the more melodramatic parts. As a whole, the short works but it is very much a matter of the strongest parts giving a helping hand to a rather corny and melodramatic streak that runs all the way through it; still though, well worth a look.
