A cultural murder mystery with a nifty ending

It's a Saudi Arabian murder mystery set in modern times in and around Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Nawal (Mila Al Zahrani) is a young, recently divorced woman who lost her infant daughter two days after birth. She refused to let her husband have a second wife, so he divorced her. She is working at a local police station run by genial Colonel Majid (Shafi Al Harthi) and Lt. Ali (Aziz Gharbawi), where her job is to digitize paper records. One day, she is the only woman in the station when a young female body is found in the nearby desert. Following custom, the police ask her to be present when the male officers investigate the body and scene. Nawal becomes obsessed with finding the identity of the body and the cause of death. No one claims the body, and the police begin to assume it's an honor killing. However, the case remains open for two weeks until the body is claimed. Nawal gradually learns more about the young woman who seems connected to an all-girls high school. Nawal pursues the case to its conclusion. But there is a twist at the end.

"Unidentified" is a fascinating look into the social structure of female life in Saudi Arabia, though it was confusing to me how often Nawal seemed able to have her head uncovered. The mystery itself slowly unfolds as such stories usually do, and Nawal constantly challenges the patience of Col. Majid. The Roger Ebert reviewer disliked the twist at the end; he seemed to want "Unidentified" to be a culture study about things like family honor. I think "Unidentified" was a decent mystery with interesting cultural elements to enhance interest, and with a really nifty ending. Consequently, I liked it much more than he did. Without the cultural elements, it would have seemed slow-moving, but the setting made it exotic.
