Addressing a crucial social issue (homelessness) in unsentimental fashion, "Carsleepers" is a quite effective short film, notable for an early acting role by Marissa Bode, the actress recently featured in the hit "Wicked".

It stars Trena Penson as a single mom, who's been homeless for 10 months, trying without success to get a job in several small towns in the Midwest (movie was shot in Wisconsin). She's currently living out of her car with two young kids, played by the film writer-director Sean Bode's kids Tristan and Marissa.

We witness her daily struggles, unable to get into a shelter, since it won't admit kids, and getting nowhere looking for jobs. She loves her children and tries to take care of them, but it seems hopeless. Her social worker, ably portrayed by Tom Lodewyck finds a job possibility for her but it would require her to have a fixed address, and his only workable suggestion (which she rejects out of hand) is to give up the kids to foster care in order to enter a shelter and qualify.

She's mistreated by a shop manager (a believable low-life villain portrayed by Andy Schatner) and also has a frightening run-in with a pair of callow guys who attack her car one night. Eventually, the movie ends in extremely bittersweet fashion as mom makes the best possible choice out of an untenable situation.

It's a good example of low-budget regional filmmaking, with sincerity making up for an absence of production resources. Both Bode children give solid, unaffected performances, with a pre-teen Marissa acting before she suffered paralysis in a car accident.
