Director Joe Dante started his career cutting trailers for producer Roger Corman, and his first film, Pirhana, was produced by Corman. As a director, Dante frequently cast not only Corman himself, but several other actors who had worked on Corman productions. In the case of Gremlins, this included Dick Miller and Jackie Joseph, who had appeared in Corman's original The Little Shop of Horrors.
