Suspenseful Film About a Man I Could Not Admire

"Seul" is a fairly entertaining film with a suspenseful atmosphere. The main character is reasonably likable, which makes it easy to connect with him and keeps the movie engaging. I also discovered and learned a great deal about the Vendée Globe race. Most of the supporting characters are likable as well, although the wife was probably the one I connected with the least. Another interesting aspect of the film is seeing how modern technology allows someone to survive alone on a boat for such a long time.

What ultimately prevents me from truly liking the movie, however, is that I personally find the race itself rather pointless. Of course, this is just my opinion. I do not feel the same way about astronauts exploring space, the Moon, or distant planets, because there is a genuine sense of discovery involved. I can also understand people who climb dangerous mountains. But spending endless days alone on the ocean, with very little to do, feels excessive to me.

I also found the main character's decision deeply selfish. Risking his life and potentially leaving his children without a father for the sake of personal achievement struck me as hard to justify. To me, people who participate in such extreme races often seem unable to fully adapt to ordinary social life and human relationships. In many cases, it feels as though they are more drawn to isolation and escape than to family life or society itself.

The protagonist reminded me of certain men who prefer solitary activities such as hunting, fishing, or long expeditions because they struggle with the complexities of modern social life. Whether or not that interpretation is fair, it made it difficult for me to fully sympathize with him or truly love a film centered around such a character.
