Belladone: A Dystopia That Forgets to Bite

Ninety minutes later, it's hard not to see Belladone as a missed opportunity, given how compelling its initial premise is. In a world where the elderly are forced to live in state-run institutions, a young woman jealously watches over a small community of old people secretly residing on an island. When shipwrecked outsiders arrive, bringing with them a breath of freedom and renewal, the residents begin to die one by one.

From this intriguing dystopian setup, the director does surprisingly little. Nor does she explore the potentially whodunit nature of the situation. These elements serve merely as a launchpad, before Belladone settles into a fairly straightforward piece of French drama - mercifully not overloaded with auteurist tics - or rather a philosophical fable addressing end-of-life issues with a certain relevance.

The script raises questions without rushing to provide definitive answers, notably around whether extreme safety and hygienic control genuinely meet the deeper needs of those nearing the end of their lives. While there is some pleasure in watching this falsely serene community gradually rediscover a taste for life, a lingering frustration remains: Belladone shows an almost immediate lack of interest in its lightly science-fictional foundations, which could have injected energy into a film that ultimately feels too austere and emotionally distant to fully connect, without compensating through exceptional insight.
