brilliant choreography and the mix of good and bad weirdness

I saw this years ago on "alive from off-center" on PBS and it always stuck with me. So I hunted it down on YouTube.

It's for prokofiev's ballet set in a child's dollhouse, and all the dancers are wearing puffy costumes and doll masks. The choreography by Maguy Marin his wildly quirky and original and the dancers, especially Cinderella, are wonderful.

Unfortunately, at times this becomes a little bit too artsy. There are long sections where prokofiev's music is replaced by weird child noises. Like one where Cinderella is like crawling around in a box with a mannequin while you hear giggling squealing. This is really strange and not especially enjoyable, even if it is somewhat interesting at first.

When there is ballet combined with actual music, this is amazing. It makes me want to track down some more of Marin's pieces. But I would have added another star to it if the music had just never stopped.
