Presuming that the trio flew to Indonesia from Southern California on the U.S. West Coast, it is over 8,300 miles by a direct air route. The small plane they boarded lacked the range to get there. They would have run out of fuel less than halfway there--but of course no sane pilot would attempt such a flight in such a small plane. The only plane that could make such a flight would be a large jetliner such as a Boeing 777.
