A group of Danes abroad have their relaxed lives turned upside down when Iraq's dictator Saddam Hussein invades Kuwait in 1990. The borders in the small desert state close. Danes and other Western foreigners are therefore taken hostage while a war is brewing.

Most Danes agree to travel to Baghdad in the hope of coming to Denmark. However, it quickly becomes clear that they have walked into a trap. Saddam Hussein uses them as bomb shields rather than letting them go home. The Danish Foreign Minister Uffe Ellemann-Jensen refuses to negotiate with Saddam Hussein, and the situation seems completely deadlocked.

The Danish attaché, Mogens Pedersen, is very soon the only Western hostage left in Baghdad. While American troops prepare to bomb Iraq, two specialists from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs set out on a dangerous and top-secret mission to bring Mogens Pedersen home.
