Adam Dallas's hilarious short film Count Yoga is a lighthearted homage to the horror genre inspired by famous Hollywood vampires played by Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi and Christopher Lee. It is clearly obvious that Dallas has a great fondness for the genre with its exploration of sexual desire leading into darker and more macabre territory explored in nineteenth century Gothic novels and their numerous twentieth century cinematic manifestations in the last 70 or more years. To me what is immensely likable about the film is a uniquely Australian touch to Count Yoga; brilliantly played by Craig Walker, whose Count Yoga is a mixture of serious vampire and a Lothario. To place Count Yoga in contemporary Sydney is a directorial masterstroke deftly handled by Dallas bringing out the comedy without losing the horror element. The cinematography is crisp and all the actors play their roles with a mixture of humour without overdoing the slapstick deliberately underplaying their roles thus making the comic script come alive on screen. Adam Dallas is a screenwriter and director to watch out for in the future and has produced a gem with Count Yoga. It is a thoroughly enjoyable 17 minutes best seen with a glass of red wine. 9 out of 10.
