Clay Room; An Unfinished Narrative of War Love and Forgotten Geography

The film "Clay Room" is Mohammad Asgari's first feature film; a film based on a script by Pedram Karimi in the context of the Sacred Defense genre and deals with the historical event of Operation Mersad in the summer of 1988. On the surface, this work has attempted to establish a link between the two fundamental themes of love and resistance and to present a new image of war through the story of a popular figure. However, what we ultimately see on screen is a work of fiction that, in the process of combining a romantic drama with a war epic, suffers from narrative ambiguity and a genre identity crisis.

The film takes place in a village in western Iran. Shahu, played by Touraj Alvand, is a truck driver who is in love with a girl named Khazal (Anahita Afshar), but Khazal's father's opposition prevents their marriage. Meanwhile, the attack of the MKO on the west of the country and their invasion of the village change the fate of Shahu and the people.

Shahu, who until yesterday was only looking for marriage, this time goes to the Iranian military forces to save the people of the village and finds himself on the path to becoming a hero. This simple narrative forms the dramatic core of the film, but in its continuation it faces fundamental weaknesses in narrative logic and structural coherence.

From the very beginning, the film tries to establish a balance between the two axes of "love" and "war". In the first half, the main focus is on the relationship between Shahu and Khazal, and the film tries to portray the tenderness of this rural love with poetic mise-en-scènes and close-up shots; but with the beginning of the conflicts, the narrative suddenly turns from a romantic melodrama into a war film with an epic tone.

This transition lacks psychological and logical context, and for this reason the viewer feels that he is faced with two separate films that are connected only through the main character. This discontinuity in the narrative is one of the most obvious signs of the film's genre identity crisis.

From an aesthetic perspective, The Mud Room makes significant efforts to recreate the space and geography of the Holy Defense era. Filming in pristine areas of the west of the country and utilizing natural light has given the images a sense of realism and a certain documentary-like quality.

The combination of handheld shots and smooth camera movements on a rail has helped create a variable and dynamic rhythm; a rhythm that, although in parts does not match the narrative continuity, is effective in conveying the sense of anxiety and instability of the final days of the war.

The set and costume design have also been done with relative precision and have managed to create a believable atmosphere of the villages of western Iran in the sixties. However, in some shots, especially in battle scenes, this precision has given way to exaggerated stage settings that are more reminiscent of Hollywood representations of war than they are realistic.

From a technical perspective, the sound recording and sound design in the film are considered one of the strengths. The sound effects of bullets, the sound of airplanes, and the echoes of explosions in the mountains have helped create a tense and tangible atmosphere.

But the film's most important challenge is evident at the level of the script and direction. The military logic of the narrative is far from reality in many moments. Sending an entire company to save the same number of villagers is an unjustifiable decision.

Also, showing the mass movement of people in broad daylight contradicts the most obvious military principles of the era. If these scenes had been designed in the dark of night and with smaller groups, both the realism of the work would have increased and the narrative suspense of the film would have been strengthened. In other words, the script is superficial in understanding the logic of war and merely uses the battle as a backdrop to display the characters' emotions.

On a dramatic level, The Mud Chamber faces another problem: the incomplete characterization of the hero. Shahu is initially a passive and somewhat timid character; a simple man who has no concern other than marriage, but then suddenly and without any acceptable psychological background, he becomes a selfless hero. This inner leap is neither the result of a gradual transformation of the character nor is it explained based on his lived experience throughout the narrative.

The result is that instead of empathizing with the hero, the audience witnesses a mechanical and unbelievable transformation. This weakness in designing the character arc is one of the most important reasons for the film's inability to create human drama.

In successful films of the Holy Defense, such as Mahdi's Situation (Hadi Hejazifar) or Che (Ebrahim Hatamikia), the hero's inner transformation occurs through gradual decisions, failures, and personal conflicts, not in the form of a sudden leap.

Similarly, the script is also incapable of depicting secondary relationships. The relationship between Shahu and Khazal, which is the main focus of the story in the first half of the film, is completely marginalized in the second half. This neglect of the romantic line destroys the emotional coherence of the film and causes the emotional burden of the work to remain only on the shoulders of a few early scenes.

From a narrative perspective, the lack of effective twists and clear turning points has made the film's rhythm slow and monotonous. The viewer is left waiting for an important event that never occurs in a satisfactory manner.

Meanwhile, the only climax of the film is in the sequence where the soldiers stand against the invaders and save the villagers; a sequence that is remarkable both in terms of execution and in terms of emotional load; but the problem is that the entire film seems to be designed to reach this scene and has nothing to say after that. A structure that relies on a climax but lacks a coherent narrative path to reach it inevitably remains superficial.

Compared to other contemporary works of the Holy Defense genre, The Mud Room is in a middle position. If you consider films like "The Midday Adventure: Blood Trail" by Mohammad Hossein Mahdavian and "The Mehdi's Position" by Hejazifar as successful works in dealing with the Mersad operation,
