Appofeniacs worked for me because it does not use its subject as a gimmick. It understands how ugly this really is. Deepfakes, face swaps, manipulated images, artificial reality. At first, that sounds like technology. The film turns it into something much worse. It shows how quickly truth can become worthless once an image feels more believable than what actually happened.

That is where its strength lies for me. This is not horror coming from somewhere outside. It grows out of something that already exists. Something that is already being used. Something that in the wrong hands is not just cynical or embarrassing, but destructive. Reputation, identity, trust, control. Everything can collapse the moment faces are replaced, reality is faked, and people are forced to fight something that never really happened and still leaves real damage behind.

The film starts strong and becomes even stronger by the end. The further it escalates, the more it feels like it is not just playing with a modern topic. There is real fear in it. Not fear of machines, but fear of manipulation. Fear of reaching the point where you cannot even trust your own eyes anymore.

That is exactly why Appofeniacs felt so original to me. Not because it simply mentions something current, but because it turns it into something that actually feels of this moment. For me, this is one of those rare films that takes a modern danger and does not flatten it into a message, but makes you feel what it can do.
