Slow-going but effective Bengali folk-horror effort

Living in a remote village, the locals try to help a friend of theirs unable to get over his recently deceased wife, come to terms with his grief and depression, eventually realizing that he needs to undertake a special journey into the woods even though there's a danger lurking inside.

Overall, this one comes off far better than expected. Among the better features here is the rather strong central storyline that brings together multiple intriguing ideas for a strong setup. As we start with the village going through the trials and tribulations of mourning the recently deceased wife, the melancholy mood and atmosphere are quite apparent in how dour and downbeat the village is as they try to pull him through his grief. That is a genuinely tough situation to get over, and his reliance on not just his father but other village elders to deal with the loss creates a fun starting point. It's not that the need to bring him out of his depression by being there for him is enough, but to pull him away from the books he reads and give him a job around others to help him takes quite a heavy-handed approach to the village's desire to see him get back on his feet and move on in life. The declaration that he needs to go on a special journey into the wilds of the land and take a self-realization trip to discover what he's really about is brought about quite logically, as well as the idea is brought up and introduced as a last resort to get him going with his life. When the time comes for that journey, the film becomes a lot of fun. Based on the setup provided with the flashbacks to life in the village and the encouragement of his friend, he heads off into the jungle to finally deal with his grief and loss in the woods, leading to a strong series of supernatural confrontations and encounters with a vengeful being. These encounters are built more on psychological and spiritual torment than far more overt instances of genuine torture as he comes face to face with not just his dead wife but also meets the vengeful witch that lives in he surrounding woods, starting to see him as the next target. These are usually intended to generate the kind of psychological torment over how he left his relationship and using those memories to ensnare and trap him in her grasp, which produce some chilling visuals as he's slowly brought into the fold. The corruption and seduction of the guy, the longer he's with the witch, manages to give everything the dark tone expected from the setup, as we see his desire for closure brings him into its grasp before we get to see the tragic outcome of everything at the very end. All of these factors together are what provide quite a lot of positive points. There are some problems here that do crop up. The biggest issue present is the sluggish and dragged-out pacing that slows the film down to a crawl, where hardly anything happens. There's a slew of scenes that focus on the villagers discussing how to help him over his wife that just have a lethargic tempo where everyone sits around talking about how to help him, which takes quite a while to churn through. Not only do we get an in-depth look at his life with his wife in flashbacks or the conversations with the troublesome neighbor trying to corrupt him, but all the other villagers try to come together to urge him to go on the spiritual journey as a major focus in the first half. These keep prolonging the journey so late in the film that it highlights the slow-going nature of the first half quite heavily, especially with the film's low-budget origins also coming into play. With the film being so low-key in terms of its grounded approach and lack of spectacle in terms of elaborate set pieces or showcase effects-work, the reliance instead is on character and dialogue, which is not a bad thing beyond showing off the lack of action in the first half. On the whole, that is enough to keep this down just slightly.
