This completely wonderful murder mystery show works on two levels simultaneously. You can watch it for easy enjoyment: cozy period setting, charming characters, satisfying mysteries. It completely works for that. But if you give it your full attention, you start catching things. The boot that's been scuffed to the correct degree of merchant wear. The subtle intake of breath, the single eye twitch, the slight tightening of a fist. The voice that breaks on a single word in an otherwise composed scene. Every element is finely crafted.

The character development is patient and earned. The direction trusts the audience. The cast finds things in their roles that make every character vivid. Every aspect - writing, costume, performance, editing - is operating at the same high level of intention. Many of the moments that make me gasp or laugh out loud are subtle threads woven into the larger narrative.
