The original pilot script written by Lena Waithe was about a young single Black woman who switches her online profile picture with her White roommate. Executives at Black&Sexy TV felt the story would have longer legs if the roommate character was Bi- Racial or a Light Skinned Black woman and the two roommates were long time best friends instead. Creators Lena & Ashley agreed to this thematic shift and the series focused on the friendship and the realities of colorism in the Black Community from that point forward.
