Tonally, "Testing" reminds me of something which could have been a subplot in a lost season of HBO's Looking, rather than the more morose shadings of 2020s content.

Andy Reid does well in playing the type of guy who uses humor and immaturity as a crutch - he's annoying, but you understand who he is.

Christopher Jacot is equally good at playing the contradictory character of an authority figure who had unprotected sex with a much younger man and is clearly still drawn to him.

Reid and Jacot have a solid chemistry which keeps you involved in the relationship of the characters, all the way up to the very sharp ending.
