The Legend of the Pope Lick Monster (1988)

The Pope Lick Monster is a creature that apparently lives in Louisville, KY. Legend has it that the creature is part man, part sheep and if you go on the train tracks on Pope Lick Road he will come out and put you in a trance, which will cause you to be hit by a train. In this sixteen-minute short three teenagers travel out to the train tracks.

I'm from Louisville, KY so I know very well about this legend. I personally don't believe it but many people have had fun going out to these tracks and looking for the monster. With that said, some have also gone out there and gotten themselves killed including an incident in 2016. With that said, this short film is mildly entertaining in its own way and especially if you like the Universal horror pictures of the 1950s.

This film looks like a monster movie that you would have watched at the drive-in during the 50s and I give director Ron Schildknecht a lot of credit for that. He certainly makes the film look quite good, although it certainly suffers from some weak performances and a really, really annoying redneck song that will probably embarrass anyone from Louisville.

With that said, the film has enough charm to where it's certainly worth watching and it does do a decent job at explaining the legend to those that aren't from the area.
