Fittingly for a story about characters with both a public-facing persona and a hidden, secret identity, the character played by Steven Waddington is named Mark Felt. In 2005 it was revealed that a former FBI deputy director named Mark Felt was the informant who had for decades been known only under the pseudonym "Deep Throat." Felt / Deep Throat was one of the main sources for Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein's investigation into the Watergate scandal; Felt's revelations and Woodward and Bernstein's journalism were instrumental in the end of Richard M. Nixon's presidential administration. Deep Throat's real identity was the subject of decades of widespread speculation and remained a closely guarded secret until Felt himself revealed that he was the source.
