Shades of Jade started production in the summer of 2011 and completed in February 2012. The idea for the documentary came after a chance encounter with Alphonso King Jr. and Brandon Bent on Facebook. It was quickly realized after filming a 5 minutes film on Alphonso, for Fab Magazine, that there were many more dimensions that needed to be explored. The documentary, Shades of Jade, includes several drag performances by Jade Elektra (Alphonso's drag persona), filmed at various nightclubs in Toronto, Canada. The performances are mixed with Alphonso's own original music from his album, Proud Mary: 10th Anniversary Edition (2nd Level Records). Also included are behind the scenes footage of Alphonso transforming into Jade. Most in-depth interviews were filmed in Alphonso's own familiar surroundings (e.g. his apartment) to create a sense of intimacy. Filming brought a lot of challenges with having to capture the life of Alphonso without the intrusiveness of the actual process.
