Don't be fooled by the childlike visual style. While The Plucky Squire is not especially difficult and will rarely challenge an experienced player, it is one of those games whose creativity and freshness command genuine admiration.

Told in a storybook tone full of playful wordplay, the game follows a tiny hero whose magical adventures unfold inside the pages of an illustrated children's book. From a gameplay perspective, these adventures alternate between two structures: an 8-bit-style Zelda clone and a 2D platformer.

The platforming sections feature light puzzle mechanics, while the Zelda-like sequences include lexical puzzles that allow you to alter the nature of an image by changing words in its caption - a clever idea previously seen in the charming Lost Words: Beyond the Page, but still rare enough to remain delightful.

Even if the game had stopped there, The Plucky Squire would already be an enjoyable, if slightly limited, success aimed at younger players. But its most inspired idea is allowing the hero to literally jump out of the storybook and explore a child's bedroom.

This mechanic not only enables you to re-enter the book through different points but also to search the surrounding environment for artifacts in a 3D action-platformer segment. The result rekindles that childhood pleasure of exploring gigantic environments - toy castles built from blocks, desks towering like mountains.

The game constantly shifts between 2D and 3D, alternating action, precision and stealth segments. Crucially, the gameplay is varied enough that progression never becomes monotonous.

Boss fights add further inventiveness: they may take the form of rhythm games, skill challenges, a Punch-Out!! Homage or even a Tetris-style puzzle.

Later on, you even gain the power to manipulate the book itself - flipping pages forward or backward, or tilting the entire volume to rearrange its contents.

None of these ideas dramatically increases the game's difficulty. But faced with such imagination and charm, one simply feels inclined to put cynicism aside and enjoy one of the most joyful and inventive games released in recent years.
