The origin of the webseries lies on a photo posted in 4chan by an unknown user in May 12, 2019, originally made by Bill Magritz in 2002 in a former store called Rohner's Furniture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. In the 2019 post the anonymous user accompanied the photo with a text: "If you're not careful and you noclip out of reality in the wrong areas, you'll end up in the Backrooms, where it's nothing but the stink of old moist carpet, the madness of mono-yellow, the endless background noise of fluorescent lights at maximum hum-buzz, and approximately six hundred million square miles of randomly segmented empty rooms to be trapped in. God save you if you hear something wandering around nearby, because it sure as hell has heard you". Noclipping is a video game glitch that turns off collision detection. This allows a player or object to move freely through solid barriers like walls, floors, and ceilings, accessing to parts of the game that supposedly weren't programmed to be there.
