An Unpredictable Game of Greed and Survival!

For a first Swiss-film viewing, The Safe carries a distinct atmosphere. Uwe Schwarzwalder's crime thriller doesn't immediately announce itself as anything particularly unconventional; it begins with a familiar robbery setup and lets the characters take it from there. But as the situation deteriorates, the film becomes increasingly driven by paranoia, shifting loyalties, and the question of who can actually be trusted. That gradual transformation is where the movie found its strongest footing for me.

The screenplay is the real engine here. What begins as a relatively straightforward attempt to steal a safe becomes considerably more interesting once the characters' individual motives start coming into focus. Greed, desperation, self-preservation, and unstable alliances constantly reshape the situation. There isn't really a traditional "good guy" to root for either. Everyone has their own agenda, everyone wants something from the situation, and everyone is willing to make decisions that benefit themselves.

That makes the second and third acts of The Safe particularly engaging because the tension isn't simply about whether the characters will escape, it is about who will betray whom first. The film keeps shifting the balance of power, creating an unpredictable dynamic where trusting the wrong person can have immediate consequences.

That character-driven tension also puts considerable responsibility on the ensemble, and the performances are generally solid. Uwe Schwarzwalder gives Paul enough vulnerability and desperation to make his predicament believable, while Thamar Rieser brings a strong presence to Mary. Thomas Kühl is another standout as John, bringing the volatility and uncertainty that the character requires. There is occasionally a slight disconnect in the dialogue, particularly because English isn't the performers' primary language, but the cast manages to work through it effectively and communicates the essential emotions of their characters.

Where I felt the film could have gone further was in the direction of those performances. There are moments where an actor clearly has the emotion required for a scene, but the way that emotion is staged, captured, or edited doesn't extract its full potential. Directing isn't simply about getting the right performance; it's also about deciding how that performance should be framed, paced, and cut together so the viewers feels its full impact. More precision in those areas could have made some of the dramatic moments considerably stronger.

Visually, The Safe has a personality of its own. Tobias Wyler's cinematography makes excellent use of the Swiss locations, particularly the contrast between the isolated wooden cabin and the surrounding city environments. The natural landscapes and wooded areas provide an atmospheric backdrop for the increasingly paranoid story, while the urban sequences give the film a different sense of scale. The production design complements this visual approach well, creating environments that feel grounded without becoming overly polished.

What ultimately makes The Safe work is its willingness to let distrust become the central source of tension. Instead of relying purely on action, the film understands that a room full of desperate people with conflicting agendas can be just as dangerous. The familiar robbery premise gradually evolves into something more psychologically driven, giving the film an engaging second half.

For a low-budget crime thriller, The Safe offers an intriguing combination of strong location work, character-driven suspense, and a screenplay that keeps its alliances deliberately unstable. While sharper direction could have elevated some performances and dramatic moments, the film remains an engaging watch, particularly once its straightforward robbery setup gives way to a much more unpredictable game of greed, betrayal, and survival.
