Sports Slants #6 (1931)

Sixth entry in Ted Husing's series takes a look at two different sports. First up we sit in on Tony Canzoneri and his boxing practice. We see the various styles that the boxer likes to use while Husing narrates and explains exactly what he's trying to do. For example, after a punch to the kidneys we see the boxer then get an open shot at the other boxer's ear. The second sport is billiards and we start off hearing that women are starting to get into the sport and we see a few quick shots of Betty Cooper and Emily Watson. After this quick warm up we then jump to world champion Ralph Greenleaf who puts on a wide range of trick shots. Both segments are fairly entertaining if you're already interested in the sports. Those who are familiar with the shorts that are shown on TCM will know that many different studios took a look at sports but it seems like Warner was the big player in the early part of the decade. Not only did they have this series but also the Bobby Jones golf series. Those familiar with TCM will also know that MGM would somewhat follow this with a series of shorts dealing with Pete Smith taking a look at these sports. Overall this is a fairly entertaining little film that uses slow motion for a good effect so that the viewers can get a good idea of what's going on. This is especially important during the billiards scenes. At just under 8-minutes there's certainly nothing overly deep here but if you have time to kill then this here's worth watching.
