A young maverick priest settles in the most unlikely place in the world and begins a life-long mission in Bangkok's largest slum. In a story spanning over 50 years, Father Joe helps feed, educate and provide shelter for over 80,000 children. Pulling no punches, this documentary centered around Father Joe provides an intimate look into the hidden world of child sex trafficking, warlords and the struggle of the local people of the slums in their fight to save their homes and livelihoods. Set against a backdrop of corruption, violence, prostitution, drugs, disease, and corporate entities threatening to displace them, it documents Father Joe's journey and the close-knit community who keep each other alive. Narrated by Richard Gere, and shot over 15 years with unprecedented access, the film is currently in the final stages of post-production. Highly cinematic in its approach and a reflection of the epic story, the style is action based with smooth tracking, cinematic drone aerials, slow-motion, time lapse, and symbolic motifs. Some of the more visceral stories are presented as stylized animations that communicate challenging examples of the violent abuse, pedophilia, suicide and drug addiction that Father Joe encounters every day in the brutal, desperate world of Khlong Toey. These vignettes serve as windows into the lives of the children and slum-dwellers and are drawn from Father Joe's two published collections of true stories. It's important to note that these darker scenes are counterpointed by lighter moments of hope and positive messages.
