Better than the original, but still not for me

Mount & Blade: Warband improves on the original in a lot of obvious ways. Calradia feels bigger, there is another faction to deal with, the graphics have been cleaned up and there is more freedom once you start getting involved in politics. The best part is still the combat. Riding straight into a group of infantry with a couched lance is incredibly satisfying when you time it properly, while horseback archery takes actual practice before you stop wasting every arrow. I also enjoy building an army from recruits and watching them gradually turn into experienced cavalry, archers and infantry. Once you become a vassal, start receiving land and join larger campaigns, the scale finally starts matching the idea behind the game. Warband even lets you break away, create your own kingdom and persuade other lords to join you, which is exactly the kind of freedom this series should have.

The problem is that Warband improves the original without really fixing what bothered me about it. Calradia is full of armies, wars, castles and political activity, but when I actually enter a town or speak to someone the illusion starts falling apart. Lords repeat the same kinds of dialogue, quests become familiar very quickly and villages still feel more like places on a map than actual communities. Sieges can be impressive when hundreds of soldiers are fighting for a castle, but they can also become ridiculous bottlenecks with everyone desperately trying to climb the same ladder. The combat is better than almost anything surrounding it, which means I often find myself tolerating all the travelling, recruiting and repetitive tasks just to reach the next good battle.

Warband is clearly the better game compared with the original Mount & Blade. Creating your own kingdom gives the campaign a much stronger long term goal, the new political options add some depth and multiplayer is a natural fit for the combat system. There is also something genuinely impressive about starting with a handful of nobodies and eventually riding into battle at the head of a large army. But I still have the same basic problem. The idea of living in this medieval sandbox is more exciting to me than actually doing it. Too much of the world feels empty, too many activities become repetitive and the rough presentation constantly reminds me that the ambition is much bigger than the execution. I can absolutely understand why people spend hundreds of hours in Warband, especially with everything the sandbox allows you to do. I just never get completely pulled into Calradia myself.
