A tense case that fits the GSI formula well

Johan Falk: National Target is another strong entry from the 2009 run, and by this point the GSI setup is working really well. Jakob Eklund is comfortable as Falk, while the investigation feels bigger without losing the darker street level atmosphere. The mix of police work, informants and organized crime gives the story enough tension to keep me interested from the start. It feels like the series is finding its rhythm here.

Joel Kinnaman continues to be important as Frank Wagner, because his position between the police and the criminal world gives the movie another layer. I like that the danger does not only come from the criminals themselves, but also from the risk of information ending up in the wrong hands. The GSI team also feels more established now, which makes the operation feel less like a standalone case and more like part of something larger.

The movie still has the familiar Swedish crime production and there are parts that follow a pretty standard police thriller structure. But the characters and the constant uncertainty around trust make it work better than most average crime films. It is not one of the absolute peaks of Johan Falk for me, but it keeps a solid level throughout. Another reliable and tense entry in a series that was clearly getting stronger.
