Lead actor Peter Yip, who was 62 at the time of filming, had never acted before in his life. He was one of five non-professionals who responded to an audition notice in Cantonese which the filmmakers had posted in Boston's Chinatown district. He was the last actor to be cast in the film, just two weeks before filming was to begin. Yip spent one week learning some basic acting skills and one week rehearsing with the other actors before the cameras rolled.
