This short film is a good introduction to curling, if you can pay attention without giggling too much.

Curling ranks up there with tossing the caber as one of the silliest sports. I first encountered it about a decade and a half after this short came out. I watched my television in confusion as the women -- for it was ladies' curling -- came out on the ice and tossed this huge rock and then swept. How, I wondered, had this stone gotten onto the rink in between perhaps hockey games? Why didn't the cleaning women (for that is what I took them for) pick them up or move them to the side of the rink? Why didn't they simply use a Zamboni to clear the ice?

Since then I have learned more about the game, and my questions have been reduced to wondering what happens when they run out of granite on the one small island they make the curling stones from. And I never miss an opportunity to watch ladies' curling. It's still as funny as ever.
